What we collect.
Scrollabouts is made by Some Luck Productions LLC. This page covers the website at www.scrollabouts.com, the Android app, and the iPhone and iPad app. Questions, or want something removed? Email andrew@scrollabouts.com.
The short version
- No accounts, no advertising, no in-app purchases. Nothing is sold.
- Your progress stays on your device.
- Two optional features send a little data to us: voting on a level and saving a high score.
- The website and the Android app count visits with Vercel Web Analytics. The iPhone and iPad app has no analytics.
Stays on your device
Campaign stars, daily rescue stars, days you looked up, your sound preference, your last-used initials, which levels you have voted on, and the random identifiers used for votes and high scores. None of it reaches us unless you vote or save a score, as described below.
- On the website, all of this lives in your browser's storage for this site. Clearing the site's data erases it.
- The Android app shows this website full screen through a browser installed on your phone, so your progress lives in that browser's storage for www.scrollabouts.com. Clearing that site's data in the browser erases it.
- The iPhone and iPad app has the game built in and saves inside the app. Deleting the app erases it.
Sent to us when you vote on a level
The level, whether you liked it, whether it should be easier or harder, whether you finished it, and how many walkers you rescued. The vote is stored with a one-way hash of a random identifier kept on your device, so a repeat vote on the same level replaces the earlier one. A second one-way hash, derived from your network address and the current hour, limits spam. Neither hash can be turned back into your address, and your address itself is never written to our database.
Sent to us when you save a high score
Your three-letter initials, your score, rescues, stars, and how long the run took. Initials and scores are public on the board, so pick initials or a nickname, not your name. A random identifier kept on your device is hashed before storage, so your best score on each level replaces your older one. Your rescue recording, the list of tools you placed and when, is replayed to check the score and then discarded. The same hourly spam limit applies.
Analytics
On the website and in the Android app, Vercel Web Analytics counts page views and a few game events: a level started, finished or failed, a district unlocked, a daily rescue started, the first time you use each rescue tool on a level during a visit, the map and sound switches, a result copied or shared, and the game being installed as an app. Each event carries at most two plain values, such as the level and its stars. A copy or share records only whether the result was a daily or a district, never the text or the app you shared it to.
With each page view or event, Vercel also records the page address, the referring site, an approximate location, the device type, the operating system and the browser. It uses no cookies, does not follow you to other sites, and recognizes a visit by a hash that it discards after 24 hours. To switch analytics off in a browser, run localStorage.setItem('va-disable','1') in that browser's console while on this site.
The iPhone and iPad app has no analytics. It counts neither page views nor game events.
Sharing a result
Copy puts the result text on your clipboard. Share hands it to the app you choose. Either way, we never see the text or where it went.
Email feedback
The feedback links open your own email app with a draft. Nothing is sent until you press Send, and then it arrives as an ordinary email that shows us your email address. Feedback emails stay in our inbox.
Who else handles it
- Vercel hosts the website and runs the small servers that receive votes and scores. Like any web host, it receives your network address and browser details whenever your device loads a page or sends a vote or score. It also provides the website's analytics.
- Supabase stores votes, high scores and spam-limit counters.
- Google Play and the App Store deliver the apps under their own privacy terms.
How long we keep it
- Votes and high scores stay for as long as the game runs, unless you ask us to delete them.
- Spam-limit counters are hourly, one per hashed network address. The first vote or score submitted two or more clock hours later deletes a counter: the counter for 3:00 to 3:59 goes with the first submission at 5:00 or after. If nobody submits anything, old counters stay until someone does.
- Vercel keeps the analytics counts. We can see twelve months of reports, and Vercel may keep the data longer.
- Feedback emails stay in our inbox until we delete them.
Deleting your data
- To erase what is on your device, clear this site's data in your browser for the website and the Android app, or delete the iPhone or iPad app.
- To remove a high score, email andrew@scrollabouts.com with the level and your initials, and we will delete the matching entry.
- For anything else, email us and say what you would like removed. Votes carry no name, email or network address, so we may not be able to tell which one is yours.
Children
Scrollabouts is for a general audience. It asks for no name, email or account, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
